Research summary

Noopept(Omberacetam, GVS-111, N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester)

Regulatory status
Not approved for human use in the United States. The human studies identified were published in Russian-language journals.
Strongest evidence
Small open-label human studies; animal and cell research
Overview

Noopept (omberacetam, GVS-111) is a synthetic dipeptide designed as an analog of the nootropic piracetam, studied for memory and protection of nerve cells.

What researchers study it for
  • Mild cognitive impairment after stroke or brain injury (small studies)
  • NGF and BDNF expression in the rat hippocampus
  • Oxidative damage in human neuron cultures
Mechanism

In rats it raised hippocampal expression of NGF and BDNF, two growth factors for neurons. In human neuron cultures it acted as an antioxidant and reduced cell death.

Evidence (5)
  1. Human · small / uncontrolled

    Cognitive impairment after stroke (2011)

Open study of 60 people with mild cognitive impairment after stroke; cognitive test scores improved significantly after 2 months compared with the control group.[1]

  2. Human · small / uncontrolled

    EEG study (2008)

In patients with mild cognitive impairment after brain injury or vascular disease, it increased alpha and beta EEG power and reduced delta power - a pattern the authors describe as typical of nootropics.[2]

  3. Animal study

NGF and BDNF in rats (Bull Exp Biol Med 2008)

Single and 28-day treatment raised NGF and BDNF messenger RNA in the rat hippocampus, with no tolerance on repeated treatment.[3]

  4. Cells / in vitro

Human neuron cultures (Int J Dev Neurosci 2003)

Protected human cortical neurons, including Down's syndrome neurons, from oxidative damage and cell death - more than piracetam or vitamin E did in the same model.[4]

  5. Product testing

U.S. supplement testing (Neurol Clin Pract 2021)

Detected as omberacetam in U.S. cognitive supplements; the authors describe it as not approved for human use in the United States and found labels that often misstated the contents.[5]

Limitations of the evidence
  • The human studies are small and open-label; no randomized, placebo-controlled trial was identified.
  • Products on this site are sold for laboratory research only. They are not the medicines used in the trials above, and those results do not apply to research material.
