Research summary

TB-500(Thymosin beta-4 fragment (LKKTETQ))

Regulatory status
Not approved by the FDA. FDA lists thymosin beta-4 fragment (TB-500) among substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding.
Strongest evidence
Animal and cell studies; human trials exist only for the full-length parent protein
Overview

TB-500 is a short synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4), a 43-amino-acid protein involved in cell migration and actin regulation. It is not the same molecule as Tβ4, and most published research is on the full-length protein.

What researchers study it for
  • Wound and tissue repair (Tβ4 models)
  • Cardiac and ocular repair (Tβ4 research)
Mechanism

Tβ4 binds actin and, in research models, promotes cell migration, blood-vessel formation and reduced inflammation.

Evidence (3)
  1. Human · randomized trial

    Full-length Tβ4 for venous ulcers (phase 2)

73 patients randomized to topical Tβ4 or placebo. Safety was comparable to placebo; the authors report efficacy findings that 'suggest' faster healing at one dose. This is the parent protein, applied to the skin - not TB-500.[1]

  2. Human · randomized trial

    Full-length Tβ4 safety in volunteers (phase 1)

Single and multiple intravenous doses of Tβ4 in healthy volunteers, placebo-controlled.[2]

  3. Regulatory

    FDA compounding risk list

FDA lists thymosin beta-4 fragment (LKKTETQ), also known as TB-500.[3]

Limitations of the evidence
  • No published human trial of the TB-500 fragment itself.
  • Results for full-length Tβ4 cannot be assumed for the fragment.
  • Products on this site are sold for laboratory research only. They are not the medicines used in the trials above, and those results do not apply to research material.
Questions researchers ask
Is TB-500 the same as thymosin beta-4?
No. It is a 7-amino-acid fragment of it. Human trials in the literature used the full 43-amino-acid protein.
